Creativity & Culture

Sunday, March 12th

Did you ever consider that God, as our creator, created us to create? We all have creativity inside of us that can be used, even if we don’t always realize it. Perhaps the key to discovering our creativity will come through discovering our own story and learning how God can use that to impact culture and change our world. What were you created to create?

Work through the following Scriptures and questions on your own, and get together with your running partner, Life Group, or friends and family to talk through what you are learning!

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Who is someone in your life (a friend, a family member, etc.) you perceive as more creative than you? What about them or their activities causes you to view them as highly creative?
  2. Do you remember a time in your childhood when you enjoyed creativity? With what activity or activities were you engaged? If you stopped, what caused you to put the creative activity away?
  3. How do you feel about the idea of redefining creativity as, “our ability to divulge (or share with others) what we can imagine” ? What would you add or take away from this definition? With this definition in mind, what kinds of activities or roles can you see as creative?
  4. What fears do you have about being creative or about making art? What does failure look like in your mind? How can you overcome your fears in this area and begin again?
  5. Read Galatians 1:10. This week we heard that when we use our creativity for God, we are reminded that we find our sufficiency in Him, not in approval from people around us. Have you ever found yourself overly concerned with what other people think about you? What are some examples of this that you can recall, and how can you overcome this mindset?
  6. What are some ways you can bear God’s image as a creator in the world around you? What steps will you take in the weeks to come to discover and focus on what you were created to create?

KEY SCRIPTURE

Galatians 1:10 — Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.

DIGGING DEEPER

#created2create Challenge
This week we learned all about the creativity we have inside of each of us, how we can discover it, and how we can use that creativity to change the world around us and share the love of Jesus. Now it’s time to put what we’ve learned into action! As you go through the Message Steps this week, think through what God has created you to create. Whether it’s in your role as a stay-at-home parent, an after school mentor, a CEO, a dancer, or a dog walker, how can your unique story impact culture? As you discover the answer to these questions, take a photo of your “creativity,” hashtag it #created2create, and tag one of our social media accounts listed below. We can’t wait to see all of your creativity!
